The 3Rs Concept
Until now, the underlying symptoms of stress in animals have always been treated as separate issues, especially when giving primary treatments. While stress in animals can come from many sources including diseases, surgery, antibiotic therapy or something as simple such as travel or kenneling, it is now known that many underlying symptoms are linked. These linked symptoms of stress can include reduction of energy, dehydration, and imbalances of gastrointestinal bacteria. It is now understood that a better approach to return the animal back to a healthy normal state is to treat all of these underlying symptoms simultaneously, in addition to the primary treatment.
When addressing the immediate cause of stress in animals, the basic theory of the “3R”s states the animal should be concurrently Re-hydrated, Re-energized and the gastrointestinal tract Re-colonized. This “3R”s approach is now proven to have synergistic effects with the primary treatment in helping animals return to optimal equilibrium. By having the “3R”s approach help with the linked underlying symptoms, the primary treatment will have a better chance of being more effective. The “3R”s approach will put the animal on a faster road to recovery.
